managed to escape. he is back in custody tonight but only after turning himself in. our ken molestina is standing by to tell us how this just happened. >> that's what the u.s. marshals are investigating a right now. a source within the marshalls tell us what happened is that brewer slipped out of his i..d bracelet. >> that's crazy. >> we conceal the identity of this recently released inmate saying he was still in custody when he heard that brewer managed to escape. >> that's crazy, man. >> reporter: unofficial information from a source within the u.s. marshals suggests brewers managed to swap id bracelets after seeing a judge and took on the inmates

identity and charge allowing him to walk out a free man. >> they come through an area called a u.s. marshals bull pen. it is busy, crowded, chaotic. >> reporter: dc criminal defense attorney says he is familiar with the process inmates go through during booking and arraignments. >> it would be fairly easy for someone to take one of the plastic arm bands to try to stretch it or stretch the holes in there and slide it with some work off of their hands and switch with someone else. >> reporter: so that's the theory that investigators are looking into right now. we understand that brewer could now face a federal escape charge, bruce. that carries with it an additional five years in prison as a punishment. if found guilty of that he could face a fine. >> do we know why he turned himself in. >> according to the folks we have been talking to apparently the heat was too much to handle.

all of the attention surrounding the escape and the manhunt. he had no money, nowhere to turn and realizedded people were looking for him. >> what about the guy who switched bracelets with him much what's his story? >> we understand he has been released again. bradley allen is his name. haven't been able to make contact with him tonight. but again we do understand he was released and we were able to sort out that information as he was released as his proper identification was was discovered. earlier today 9news now spoke with a neighbor, one of the last people to see a man alive. >> pointed me in many directions in my life because he had overcome many obstacles himself. he was kind of like a person who wanted to see people accomplish things. so sad what happened to him and he didn't have to kill him

because he would have given it up. he had been robbed several times before that recently. so he never put up a fight. >> that neighbor wishes to remain anonymous. he was a washington dc native, a vill marry veteran. he is survived by his wife, three brothers and nine sisters. casey anthony could be a free woman in just an hour or so. we don't know the exact time of her release from a florida jail. she has called this jail home for three years. it could come as early as midnight tonight. once she is released she will walk into the center of a public firestorm. karen brown has the latest tonight. >> reporter: inmates set up barricades to keep protestors at bay. as the most infamous mom in america gets ready to caulk. on sunday after more than 1000 days behind bars acquitted murder suspect casey anthony will be a free woman. but that freedom comes with a price. being released into a population that still largely believes she is guilty of

killing her 2-year-old daughter caylee. it is a problem even her attorneys acknowledge. >> she is not going to be free like you and i or anybody else watching will be free because whose face is better known in this country than hers. >> reporter: once she is released law enforcement will not provide casey anthony with security unless there is a verifiable threat and safety concerns have turned the how and when of her release in a closely guarded secret. >> reporter: but anthony's legal troubles are far from over. she faces defamation charges from the nanny. with interview offers raging up to $1 million and cash donations from admirers flowing into her jailhouse bank account casey anthony could decide to settle and her attorneys say anthony has received thousands of offers of places to stay. >> i'm pleased to accept this sentiment but obviously we don't have a way of background

changing. >> reporter: meanwhile, across town crowds continue to gather at a memorial set up for the little girl whose death started it all. karen brown, cbs news, orlando, florida. >> 16 states includeling florida has proposed legislation that would have kept casey anthony behind bars. the bill called caylee's law would make it a felony if children do not report their children dead or missing within a certain period of time. when casey anthony does get out of jail she will face a growing group of protestors. demonstrators have already begun gathering outside the jail where anthony is being held. they are upset the young mother was found not guilty on charges of killing her daughter. citing security reasons the attorneys have not released details of where anthony will go once released. turning elsewhere. another case of vandalism at a montgomery county school in bethesda. security guards discovered the vandalism early this morning at north bethesda middle school.

vandalism included a sexual drawing and slur word on the outside of the building. there were also several broken windows and seven cars parked on nearby beach drive have been splattered with paint. on wednesday you might recall police were called to potomac where similar vandalism had taken place. the deadline set by president obama to have a deal on the debt has come and gone. the president told lawmakers he wanted legislation written by today that would actually pass the congress. tonight it appears republican and democratic leaders are no closer to a compromised plan for raising the debt ceiling while cutting spending. if a deal is not reached by august 2nd financial experts are warning that a government default on the loan could be disastrous here and abroad. >> if we go into next week and we haven't seen any action by the president, congress, i think financial markets are going to grow increasingly unrestful. >> on tuesday house republicans will vote for a more aggressive measure to cap future spending

but the measure has almost no chance of passing the senate. maryland governor martin o'malley told the nation's governors that gop debt negotiators are deliberately trying to damage the economy. though the president barack obama will lose next year's election. o'mally said republicans are trying to steer the government towards default or higher unemployment so that voters will blame president obama for a bad economy. now republican spokesperson calling his remarks a partisan rant. dalai lama visited president obama at the white house. the president underscored the importance of protecting human rights in china. the president reiterated u.s. policy that tibet is part of china. the dalai lama is in washington for religious ceremonies. he has been making his rounds meeting with political leaders over the past 11 days. in the district's ward 7

today, a bunch of well connected people came together to bring attention to those still in the shadow unable to read. boys and girls band. music legend chuck brown. the mayor. all those among attending the rally to stamp out ill literate. >> a third read below the fourth grade level. which means their job options are really going to be quite limited. >> don't want to see the kids get their education the way i got mine. i got my high school diploma but it was in a place you don't usually get them. you know. but i appreciate the fact that i did succeed.

a section of the world's busiest freeway is the road not traveled tonight. i-405 is shutdown and crews demolished a bridge as part of the expansion. here is a report from los angeles and what happened on predictions of carmageddon. >> reporter: the massive project shutting down 10 miles of the expressway and shut out more than a half million drivers through the week. but so far what's being called carmageddon is more like carma heaven. >> it is not trafficy. it is absolutely a breeze getting around. >> lightest traffic i have ever seen in l.a. >> reporter: carmageddon hyped for weeks in this driving obsessed city. doom sayers advised motorists to buckle in for epic traffic jams, road rage and other major disruptions. it was unfounded. >> stay home, out of the car. do some exercise. >> reporter: good karma seems

in texas a woman is killed. five others hurt when her small truck collides with a semitruck. the woman's vehicle was pinned under the 18 wheeler and dragged before both vehicles burst into flames. five passengers in the car ages 6 through 18 were pulled to safety by witnesses. they were not able to get the driver out. she died at the scene. news corps' ceo rupert murdoch is playing damage control tonight. he ran a full page in some of britain's most popular papers with three words "we are sorry." tomorrow he will run ads telling the nation how he plans to fix what went so wrong in

that phone hacking scandal. murdock, his son and former news of the world editor rebecca brooks will testify before parliament sometime next week about what they knew about the alleged crimes. here is a deal we could buy into. a brand-new ipad for $69. that was the offer on the sears website yesterday afternoon. the deal went viral as people started telling their friends about it on twitter and facebook. but as it turns out the price was a big mistake. sears apologized. says they will not honor the discounted price. >> you've got to be kidding me? the ipad ii normally retails for about $750. harry potter's final installment of the series earned $92 million on its opening day. that makes it the biggest premier of any film in history. box office trackers projecting the movie will also break the opening weekend record

currently held by "the dark knight." >> that's it. it is over. can you believe it? >> finally comes to a close. >> we have got some hot, even dangerous weather headed our way? >> dangerous weather. heat index values through the middle and end of next week could hit the 100 teens in some locations. it will be intensely hot as we get to the end of the week but for the weekend. at least we will squeak out another beautiful day for tomorrow. in fact, the forecast overnight tonight is going to stay in the clear. we still have high pressure rolling. that's a good thing. we will keep it quiet as we go into the early morning hours. in fact the current temperatures have backed down quite a bit since our sunset. most of us are right now sitting in those very comfortable 70s. mid-70s across the center of town. looking much cooler out toward the west just outside the beltway. andrews air force base 70 degrees right now. yes, very calm an quiet night. things will be changing however. we will dial up our heat as we

get into tomorrow. there will be a touch more humidity. higher temperatures and, in fact, that heat wave should be coming our way towards the middle and end of the week and you'll notice that very, very stark contrast to what we have been treated to the last couple days. quite for the futurecast model. not a lot happening. moisture tries to come through. mainly sunny for your sunday but in the afternoon we might see a cloud begin to move on through. there is a slight opportunity for a brief shower or sprinkle but most of that should stay off toward the north and toward the west in most of the metro region will be dry for tomorrow. then things do start to change. but enjoy while we have it. the overnight temperatures are going to be quite comfortable. we will get down into the middle rain 60s for most of us. upper 60s inside the beltway but that southerly breeze and then pleasant for tomorrow. our air quality is starting to slip a little bit. moderate range for sunday. but by the time we get into monday and tuesday things will be much more muggy and humid. sunny with just a little

opportunity for shower and sprinkle for tomorrow afternoon and evening but overall it will be quite nice. upper 80s. reasonable humidity but a slight uptick an should see 90 degrees for the metro airport. overall the next three days will be the best of the week. mid to low 90s as we move into the hotter days tuesday and wednesday. seven-day forecast. what we are dealing with is a bona fide heat wave. although that forecast has a 98 on thursday. that could easily bump up to 100. you know when we do the seven- day forecast the best three days are in the front. those last three days are subject to change. >> beach weather. >> oh, yes. cool off anyway. >> thank you. nats a turn around? >> said they would be better tonight and it turns out they were. the manager turned out to be right. saying yesterday's defensive lapses not a concern.
